Must-Haves For Your Baby’s Nursery

Necessities and nice-to-haves

By Dana Hardek March 1, 2013
Preparing a room for the newest member of your family gives you the chance to set up a welcoming area for your newborn—and one that is designed as much for you as for your baby. Maybe you’ve used Pinterest to pick out the décor and the colors of the walls, but what items do you need to turn a regular ol' room in your house into a beautiful nursery?

Crib, crib mattress, fitted crib sheet, and a waterproof mattress cover
While many items you use in a nursery don’t need to be brand new, consider buying a new crib instead of using a hand-me-down. In 2011, crib safety regulations became much more stringent. Crib bumpers, which are included in many bedding sets, are now considered unsafe.

Changing table, changing pad, and changing pad covers
There are several types of changing tables. Some are stand-alone, with several levels that hold baby items, and they can be used until your child doesn’t need it anymore. Some parents simply buy a changing pad with contoured sides that are made to be placed on top of a dresser set. All changing pads should have a belt or restraint system, because your child is sure to get wiggly once they start getting older! Buy several changing pad covers, because you’ll be washing them a lot. Remember that dressers should always be secured to a wall.

Rocking chair or glider
If there’s room, a comfy chair (and an ottoman) will help you relax. You’ll be happy to sit down and rock your baby to sleep, especially for those middle-of-the-night feedings.

Diaper duty
You'll need to have diapers in several sizes, diaper rash ointment, wipes, and a diaper pail and disposal bags. For parents who use cloth diapers, you’ll need pre-folded or pocket diapers, diaper covers, and inserts.

Baby clothes

Onesies—you’ll need lots of onesies. It’s not unusual for babies to go through five or more a day, so the more you have, the less likely you’ll be caught without one at the ready. While you're buying onesies, get some sleepers, too. And stock up on mittens, socks, sleep sacks, blankets, shirts and pants. Don't forget hangers!

Bouncy seat or swing

If there's enough room in the nursery, these can keep baby occupied while you are folding all the onesies you’ve washed from the day before.

Bathtime supplies

Brush and comb, some towels and washcloths, and a baby tub.

Medical kit

Most kits include baby nail clippers, a nasal aspirator, digital thermometer, saline drops, gas drops, cotton balls, and Vaseline. Also consider buying a humidifier for the winter or for when your baby has a cold.

Toy storage

You'll need a place to keep all the great stuff you got from your baby shower!
